Automotive Tips from L and M Motors Inc: Knowing When Your Timing Belt Should Be Replaced

Posted October 21, 2015 12:00 PM

The timing belt in your engine controls the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves. Anchorage drivers need to replace it on a schedule to avoid failure.

Timing belts are very difficult to get to, requiring quite a bit of labor to access. Timing belt replacement is one of the more expensive maintenance services, but the cost at L and M Motors Inc to correct an engine damaged by a broken timing belt is much, much more.

The timing belt has a tensioner to help maintain proper belt tension. The tensioner should be replaced along with the timing belt and any idler pulleys at the vehicle manufacturer’s specified service interval. Your L and M Motors Inc service advisor can help you with the timing belt.

Automotive Tips from L and M Motors Inc: Making a Battery Last Longer

Posted October 20, 2015 12:00 PM

One thing all Anchorage drivers can do to extend the life of their battery is to keep it clean. A greasy, dirty battery holds in damaging heat. Same goes for removing corrosion from the terminals. L and M Motors Inc can help maintain your battery.

Allowing your battery to be deeply depleted – like from using your headlights when the engine is off – is very harmful to your battery. Most automotive batteries can only take that about 10 times before they are ruined.

Also, making sure you have a full charge every month or so extends battery life. Either an extended drive at freeway speeds around the Anchorage are or using a battery charger will preserve your battery’s ability to hold a full charge.

Automotive Tips from L and M Motors Inc: Serpentine Belt Tensioner

Posted October 7, 2015 12:00 PM

The serpentine belt tensioner applies pressure to the serpentine belt, maintaining optimal tension to drive the accessories like the alternator and A/C compressor. At L and M Motors Inc we know that the service life of the belt tensioner is the same as the belt itself, so they should always be replaced together. A worn tensioner prevents the accessories from spinning properly, leading to premature wear and noise for Anchorage drivers.

Your vehicle manufacturer has a recommended mileage interval for serpentine belt replacement. A complete accessory drive system service replaces the serpentine belt, the belt tensioner and any idler pulleys your car might have. Your friendly and professional L and M Motors Inc service advisor can inspect your system and let you know if it’s time for a replacement.

Automotive Tips from L and M Motors Inc: Causes of Wheel Misalignment

Posted October 2, 2015 12:00 PM

When properly aligned, all of your wheels are pointed in the same direction. Your vehicle will track true and handle the way it is designed. Anchorage drivers often associate our wheels being “knocked” out of alignment with an event like a major crash, hitting a pothole, curb or some other object. While these can certainly take your wheels out of alignment, the bumps and bounces of everyday Anchorage driving take their toll on wheel alignment as well. Your car can lose alignment over time with just normal driving.

When your wheels are out of alignment, the team of automotive professionals at L and M Motors Inc in Anchorage can return your wheels to the factory settings. Most owners’ manuals suggest an inspection every year or two.

So we started hearing a high pitched noise from the back brakes on a trip to anchorage from seward, after checking out another local shop who was extremely rude I jumped on yelp and stumbled across these lovely people. They got me in right away just to take a peek, saying they couldn't fit me in till later but would take a look just to see if it was still safe to drive and what to expect. They were curtious, friendly, honest and fair. I highly recommend this establishment! Thanks for getting us back to Seward safely xoxo
